Important Terminologies in Teen Patti Poker Game

Teen Patti Poker Teen Patti Poker

Now you know the hand rankings that will determine the winner, you need to learn some of the important terms related to the game. These terms will help you understand better how the betting structure works. Also, these terms define how the game is played.

  • Ante (Boot): Ante or the boot amount that must be paid by all the players that are playing before they are dealt with the cards. This amount is equal to the minimum bet that the game allows.
  • Blind: In Teen Patti Poker, a player can either look at his card or play blind without looking. The person betting blind will pay only half the amount of what a person bet who has seen his cards. There is a limit on how many turns you can bet while staying blind. It all depends on the stack size of the table. After that limit, the person is forced to see his cards.
  • Chaal (Call): The amount that is paid by the players who has seen their cards.
  • Fold (Pack): A player can fold his cards if he thinks he doesn’t have a good hand. The fold is basically quitting the game for that round.
  • Side Pot: A side pot is basically a show between the two players. A player can request the previous player (player who played last) to do a side pot if both the players have seen their cards. Side pot will only happen if the previous player accepts the request. If he rejects, then the player playing will be asked to pay the amount that the previous player bet. If the player requesting the side pot has the better hand, then the other player will be forced to fold his hands and vice-versa. But, if the hands of both the players are same, then the player requesting will be asked to fold.
  • Show: When there are only two players left in the game, then both the player has the option to show their cards. If a player show’s his cards then the opponent is forced to show his and the winner will be decided. The opponent has to pay the amount equal to the previous betting before showing his hands. If the opponent refuses, then he has to fold his hands.

These are some of the important terms that you must learn before playing the game. These terms dictate how the betting structures going to be.

Teen Patti Poker Betting Mechanics

Now you know the important terms, I’ll get on with the betting structure for Teen Patti. There are three types of betting structure in Teen Patti Poker.

  • Fixed-Limit: In Fixed-limit you can only bet which are predetermined by the tournament.
  • No-Limit: There is no limit to betting. You can bet how much ever you want in this betting structure.
  • Pot-Limit: A game played with a pot-limit betting structure allows any player to raise up to an amount equal to the size of the whole pot before the raise.

I’ll explain the betting structure for a Fixed-Limit Betting. This is played more often than the other two betting structures in Teen Patti poker game.

Before the game starts there will be a fixed Ante, Pot-Limit( The maximum you can win each round), and Max Bet.

Let me take the following into consideration.

  • Ante = 50 Chips
  • Pot-Limit=50,000 chips
  • Max Bet= 5000 chips

I’ll take the above as an example to make you understand the game mechanics better.

  1. The game is played between 2-10 players. Each player has to pay 50 chips (Ante) to receive their cards. Once each player has paid their ante, Each player receives 3 cards face-down.
  2. The player can decide whether he wants to see his cards or not. The player to the left of dealer button plays first by betting 50 chips or 100 chips (double).
  3. The next player has to pay the amount equal to the previous betting or double of that and it continues. The player also has the option to pack (Fold) his cards. Once he packs his cards, he has to wait for the next hand.
  4. Now, if the player has seen his cards and bets 100 chips (Chaal) and the player next to him hasn’t seen his cards then he has to bet 50 chips (Blind), not 100. He can also bet 100 chips(Double). The next player if seen his cards has to bet 200 chips or 400 chips.
  5. The amount keeps increasing until it reaches the max bet. Which in this case are 5,000 chips.
  6. Once the amount reaches 5,000 chips, the player cannot double the bet. He has to keep betting 5000 until the pot-limit is reached. In this case, it’s 75,000 chips.
  7. Anytime in between the game,  A player can request a side-pot to the previous player who has seen his cards.

This is how the betting mechanics work in Teen Patti Poker. It looks difficult, but trust me, once you play the game you’ll see how easy it is to play the game and is super fun.

Deciding the Winner in Teen Patti Poker

Teen Patti Poker

Once you understand the betting structure, you need to know when the betting stops and how a player can win.

The betting stops and the winner is decided in one of the following ways.

  • When all the players fold except for one player. Then the player who hasn’t folded his cards wins the round.
  • When there are only two players left in the game and one of the player asks for a show. Then the other player has no other option but to pay his amount and show his cards or fold. The player with the best hand wins the pot. If both of the players have the same cards, then the pot is shared between the two.
  • When the final betting amount reaches the Max Pot size. Once the max pot size is reached, both the players are asked to show their cards and the winner is decided.

The following are the rules for a show:

  • The seen player can ask for a show with a blind player for four times the current bet.
  • If both players have seen their cards, then either may ask for a show by paying two times the current bet.

One of the best guide I have seen to learn Teen Patti Poker. Really well written and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  2. You asked about the history of Teen Patti. I am not sure how long it has been played in India, but it is almost identical to the popular British game Three-Card Brag, which was described in print in the 18th century (by Seymour in 1721 and by Hoyle in 1751) and has been played ever since. According to David Parlett (Oxford History of Card Games, 1991), Three-Card Brag evolved from the 16th-17th century British game Post and Pair. It seems likely that Three-Card Brag was introduced to India in the 18th or 19th century during the period of British rule, and acquired the name Teen Patti (Three Cards) at that time.
